The overlap is real rather than sloppy: Netflix is OTT and VOD, Sky Stream is IPTV and linear, and a FAST channel is linear TV funded like a website. The distinctions only matter when someone uses one word to imply another.
How IPTV Works, Slightly Under the Bonnet
The server side. An IPTV provider ingests channels from broadcast sources, encodes them into internet-friendly video (H.264/H.265), and serves them from streaming servers. Quality depends on the source signal, the encoding bitrate, and — critically — server capacity per user. This is the part that separates good providers from cheap panels: under-provisioned servers are why bargain services freeze at 3pm on Saturday.
The protocol part. Your app requests a stream URL; the server responds with video chunks a few seconds at a time, which your device buffers and plays. Live channels and VOD titles work identically — that's why one app handles both. The 'Xtream codes' login you'll see in setup guides is just a standardised way of telling the app where the server is and who you are.
Your side. Any screen with an internet connection and an app: Firestick, Smart TV, Android box, Apple TV, phone or PC. Bandwidth needs are modest — 15–25 Mbps for HD, 25–35 Mbps for 4K — well within ordinary UK broadband. No dish, no engineer, no new wiring: the infrastructure already enters your house through the router.
M3U versus Xtream Codes. These are the two ways your app is handed a subscription, and the words appear on every setup screen in this industry. An M3U link is one long URL containing the whole channel list — simple, portable, and prone to breaking when anything upstream changes. Xtream Codes is a server address plus a username and password, which most modern players prefer because it pulls the channel list, categories and EPG automatically and survives changes better. Same subscription either way; choose Xtream where a player offers both.
The EPG glue. A proper service pairs streams with an electronic programme guide — the channel-grid TV listing — plus catch-up windows and logos. It's invisible when done well and maddening when not; EPG quality is one of the quickest tells of a quality provider.

IPTV Networks, OTT and the Words People Argue About
Unicast vs multicast — why 3pm Saturday is the hard part. An aerial or dish broadcasts one signal that any number of homes receive at no extra cost to the broadcaster. IPTV over the open internet works the opposite way: every viewer gets their own individual stream, called unicast. A thousand people watching the same match means a thousand separate streams leaving the server, which is precisely why capacity planning decides whether a service survives kick-off. Multicast — one stream shared across a network and duplicated only at the final hop — is dramatically more efficient, but it only works when the provider owns the network it travels over, which is why telco TV services can use it and internet-delivered services cannot.
IPTV vs OTT. Strictly speaking, IPTV originally meant television delivered over a provider's own managed network with guaranteed bandwidth — BT TV, and the telco TV products common across Europe. OTT (over-the-top) means video delivered across the open internet with no such control: Netflix, iPlayer, and every subscription IPTV service including this one. In everyday use the two words have collapsed into one, and almost everybody now says IPTV for both. Worth knowing when you read older technical writing that draws the line sharply.
The three flavours, and the middleware. Any IPTV system delivers some mix of live television, time-shifted TV (catch-up and replay) and video on demand. Sitting between the streams and your screen is what the industry calls middleware — in practice, the app or box firmware that draws the channel list, the EPG and the menus. A TiviMate or IBO Player is middleware; so is the software baked into a set-top box like a Formuler or MAG unit. It is why the same subscription can feel polished on one device and clumsy on another.
Codecs, bitrate and latency. Channels are encoded with H.264 or the newer H.265/HEVC, which delivers roughly the same picture at about half the bandwidth — the reason 4K is realistic on ordinary UK fibre at all. The trade-off nobody mentions in the marketing is latency: because streams are buffered in chunks, IPTV typically runs several seconds behind live satellite. Harmless for a box set, briefly annoying when a neighbour cheers a goal before your screen shows it.
